“Food Literacy for All”: U-M Sustainable Food Systems Initiative

Every Tues. (except Mar. 4), Jan. 14–Apr. 22. Public lecture series, a mix of in-person (with livestream) and Zoom sessions.

Jan. 14: “Introduction to the Series” (via Zoom). With U-M Matthaei Botanical Gardens visiting scholar Shiloh Maples and U-M Afroamerican & African studies professor Bénédicte Boisseron.

Jan. 21: “Food as Resistance.” Tambra Raye Stevenson, founder of the nonprofits WANDA (Women, Advancing, Dietetics and Nutrition) and NativSol Kitchen delves into the dual role of food as both a weapon of oppression and a pathway to liberation. Through historical examples, personal narratives, and forward-thinking strategies, Stevenson explores how food sovereignty, ancestral knowledge, and community-driven solutions can dismantle inequities and foster health, wealth, and empowerment in Black communities. Jan. 28: “Seafood Slavery in the High Seas” (via Zoom). With Paul Greenberg, author of the New York Times bestseller Four Fish: The Future of the Last Wild Food.
