“Annual Midwest Literary Walk”: Chelsea District Library

A major event in the local literary year, this day of readings by 3 writers at different Chelsea locations is highlighted by Sarah Vowell (3:30 p.m., Chelsea First United Methodist Church, 128 Park St.), author of 7 nonfiction books on American history and culture. A journalist whose work has appeared everywhere from the New York Times to Spin Magazine, she is also a popular contributor to PRI radio show This American Life. Her 2017 book Lafayette in the Somewhat United States tells the story of the American Revolution through the lens of the French aristocrat who became George Washington’s trusted officer and friend. Strand Critics and Edgar Awardwinner Angie Kim (1:30 p.m., First Congregational Church, 121 E. Middle St.) reads from her 2023 novel, Happiness Falls, a whodunit that uses the search for a man who vanishes while hiking with his autistic son to undertake a broad exploration of ideas from the relativity of happiness to psycholinguistics. Also, Shelby Van Pelt (11 a.m., Main St. Church, 320 N. Main St.) reads from Remarkably Bright Creatures, her quirky 2022 debut novel narrated by a cranky octopus. A book club favorite, it has reappeared several times on the New York Times bestseller list, largely due to word of mouth. 11 a.m.–5 p.m., various downtown locations, Chelsea.
