28th Annual Edgefest: Kerrytown Concert House
Oct. 16–19. DownBeat lists this annual festival as one of the world’s 50 top jazz/avant music festivals. The festival includes multiple shows over 4 days. Tonight: Joseph Daley Tonal Colors Trio (7 p.m.) is an ensemble of tuba player Daley, bassist Ken Filiano, and guitarist Shu Odamura that explores the improvisational concepts of legendary composer and multi-intrumentalist Sam Rivers. Andrew Bishop’s Earth Bore (8 p.m.) is a reed quartet led by U-M jazz professor Bishop, a versatile composer-saxophonist, that includes 3 clarinetists: Oliver Bishop, Peter Formanek, and Piotr Michalowski. The Sylvie Courvoisier & Patricia Brennan Duo (9 p.m.) explores the sonic possibilities of its unusual piano and vibraphone combination. Ingrid Laubrock’s Grammy Season (10 p.m.) makes densely-layered, evocative music led by saxophonist Laubrock, with guitarist Brandon Seabrook, double bassist Shawn Lovato, and drummer Tom Rainey. 7–10 p.m., Kerrytown Concert House, 415 N.
