We received 150 entries correctly identifying the Fake Ad for Fuentes Vodka Sauce on page 87 of the October issue. That page just happened to be the same one as the Back Page update.
“Hiding in plain sight!” wrote Ann Whiting. “Brazenly kitty-corner to the September Fake Ad update. Trying to trick us by making this Fake Ad twice as large as usual. Harumph! Quite the outlandish tale of Russian Blue potatoes, permafrost, a single farM IN TZarist Russia [Editor’s note: This spelled out ‘Mintz,’ the last name of our September winner.], Fuentes Vodka, etc.! Puzzling: How did that single farm survive over a hundred years since the demise of the Czars? And how did the Spanish name ‘Fuentes’ come to be attached to that vodka?? Oh well—you get kudos for originality.”
Funny thing. “Fuentes” was chosen as the name of the vodka sauce as a play on the very popular Tito’s Handmade Vodka. Tito Fuentes was, of course, an infielder for the Detroit Tigers in 1977. He had a signature way of flipping his bat every time he came to the plate. We are honestly surprised none of you made that connection in your entries. Is this even Ann Arbor anymore?
Our winner was Anne Toprak. She’s taking her gift certificate to Ayse’s Café.
