Verdi’s Requiem: UMS Choral Union Summer Sings
Observer Editor
All singers welcome to join Choral Union director Scott Hanoian in a read-through of Verdi’s spectacular and dramatic musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass, his largest nonoperatic work. With a thrilling symphonic score and virtuosic solos, the work is known for what Classical Source critic Peter Reed calls an “astounding emotional range.” The work was reportedly performed as a disguised act of defiance and hope 16 times between 1943 and 1944 by prisoners in Theresienstadt concentration camp. Tonight, participants practice the more difficult parts and, after a break, sing it in its entirety. No auditions required; music provided (or bring your own, if you have it). Sung in Latin. Refreshments. Spectators welcome. Registration at 6:30 p.m. 7–9:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium. $5 sheet music fee at the door only. Spectators free. ums.org/summersings, (734) 763–8997.
