We Are Stars (11:30 a.m.) explores the secrets of our cosmic chemistry and our explosive origins, connecting life on Earth to the evolution of the universe. The Sky Tonight (12:30 & 2:30 p.m.) is an exploration of the current night sky, with tips on how to find the cardinal directions, constellations, and planets on your own. Sea Monsters (1:30 p.m.) follows a curious dolichorhynchops (an extinct species of marine reptile) as she travels through the most dangerous oceans in history. Founded in Hungary in 1975, this world-renowned Boulder-based ensemble—a UMS crowd favorite—is known for its warmth, eloquence, and discipline, and for the ease with which it masters demanding pieces. Violinists Edward Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes, violist Richard O’Neill, and cellist András Fejér are “four of the best string alchemists on the planet,” writes a Chicago Tribune reviewer. Tonight, they perform a program inspired by the natural world, opening with Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet and closing with Beethoven’s String Quartet no. 8 in E minor, the 2nd of his 3 Razumovsky quartets, which was partly inspired by his contemplation of the starry sky. In between, the quartet performs Flow, a new work by Los Angeles composer Nokuthula Endo Ngwenyama co-commissioned by UMS and eight other presenters. Ngwenyama’s work has been called by Gramophone “solidly shaped music of bold mesmerizing character.” 7:30 p.m., Rackham Auditorium.
