Last Friday night’s Dancing in Summer showcase brought modern and contemporary works to the stage from various choreographers and companies across the country. Ypsilanti’s Riverside Arts Center space created an intimate space for the audience: it is a unique thing to be able to exhale in time with the performers or to hear the audible gasp when a piece takes a turn toward the unexpected.

There was substantial variety in the show, and this author particularly enjoyed the long lines and beautiful shapes created in The Moon reflected in East Sea, choreographed by Seyong Kim and performed by Caroline Zajac as well as the playful energy of In Trust, choreographed by Aimee McDonald and performed by the host company, Terpsichore Collective.

The overall production had a laid-back energy: this was a gathering of artists sharing their work. Overall, it was an enjoyable show featuring high-quality performance and choreography.
