“Light and Darkness”: U-M Contemporary Directions Ensemble
Jayce Ogren directs this grad student ensemble in a program highlighted by contemporary Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas’s in vain, a haunting and somber response to the rise of right-wing extremism that conductor Simon Rattle hailed as “one of the first masterpieces of the 21st-century.” Also works by other contemporary composers, including Jessie Montgomery’s optimistic Starburst, Oliver Knussen’s ebullient Two Organa, and Sean Shepherd’s musical expression of gratitude, Lumens. Portions of the program are played in total darkness. 8 p.m., U-M Moore Building, McIntosh Theatre, 1100 Baits, North Campus. Free. (734) 764-0583.
