Berliner Philharmoniker: University Musical Society
Kirill Petrenko conducts this superb orchestra on a limited tour. Today’s entire program is one of Anton Bruckner’s most contrapuntally intricate works, the monumental 1876 Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, a work that explores themes of struggle, redemption, and transcendence. “It’s the tone quality that hits you first with the Berlin Philharmonic: like a shot of adrenaline” wrote the Guardian U.K. reviewer of this program in early September. The concert is preceded at 7 p.m. in the lower lobby by “The Society for Disobedient Listeners,” a talk by Chicago-based music writer and violist Doyle Armbrust. 4 p.m., Hill Auditorium. $36–$128 (students, $25–$30) in advance only at ums.org/season/2024-25-season. (734) 764–2538.
