Dollar Tree has struggled to assimilate former rival Family Dollar, which it purchased in 2015. Reporting a $1.71 billion loss in the most recent quarter, the company announced plans to close nearly 1,000 stores. But the “optimization” isn’t all one-way: The Virginia-based chain recently opened its third Ann Arbor store. Located in the spacious Oak Valley Centre storefront that’s stood vacant since Chuck E. Cheese departed during the pandemic, it offers everyday essentials, plus various craft, seasonal, and party supplies.

Inflation means dollar stores are outgrowing their name: Dollar Tree quietly raised its primary price point from $1 to $1.25 in 2021. It plans to inch some items up to $1.50 this year, while also adding merchandise that will sell for up to $7. If that seems to encroach on slightly pricier rival 5 Below, it does—but that chain, represented locally in Maple Village and Arborland, is keeping its distance: Its “5 Beyond” items now cost as much as $25.
