Q: I know texting while driving is illegal. But what about texting while stopped at a traffic light or in stopped traffic? Is that legal?

A: A 2010 Michigan law prohibits texting while driving, and “a person is still considered to be operating the vehicle while stopped at a stoplight,” replies city communications director Lisa Wondrash. “So, texting while stopped at a traffic light or stopped in traffic is a violation of the statute. To simplify the message to drivers, if you are behind the wheel of a car, you should not be texting–period. #itcanwait.”
