This month’s I Spy is “the facade of the State Theater as it undergoes its facelift,” writes Gabe DellaVecchia. “Instead of ‘now showing’ it’s more like ‘not showing,'” quips Gaia Stanley, referring to the clue and obscured marquee.
“While often overshadowed by its sibling [the Michigan] down the block,” says David Karl, “the State is an Art Deco masterpiece in its own right.”
Designed by C. Howard Crane–architect of the Fox Theatre and the Detroit Opera House–the State opened in 1942, originally seating 1,756 in a single theater. Over the years, the space was divided, reduced, shut down, reopened, and, most recently, almost lost to office space in 2013. When the renovation is completed this fall, the State will seat 370 people in four viewing rooms of varying size.
