The eastside HomeGoods is moving from its longtime spot in Carpenter Plaza to Arborland Center, where it will occupy half of the space that Bed Bath & Beyond vacated early last year. The discount home furnishings chain will celebrate its grand opening on May 2 in the new location, which, at 20,000 square feet, is about a third less than its erstwhile home at Carpenter and Packard.
The other half of the space will be a smaller “prototype” Marshalls, which will move from its own larger space at Arborland some time this summer, according to spokespersons from the off-price department store chain and Arborland’s owner, Brixmor Property Group. A March article in the Washington Post noted that many retailers, from Macy’s to Ikea, also are “focusing on more compact and efficient stores “to lower overhead while staying close to customers.
Both HomeGoods and Marshalls are part of the TJX Companies, whose name- sake T.J. Maxx retains its eastside presence at Carpenter Plaza. (HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx are also on the west side of Ann Arbor, in Maple Village and Westgate, respectively.)
