Yunchan Lim: University Musical Society
20-year-old South Korean pianist Lim, the youngest ever Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner, returns to Ann Arbor with a program he’ll perform at the Kennedy Center on Sunday. It includes Bach’s celebrated Goldberg Variations, a Baroque masterpiece that runs the gamut of emotions with a touch of unbuttoned humor, and “ … round and velvety-smooth blend,” a commissioned piece by the South Korean composer Hanurij Lee. According to Guardian UK reviewer Andrew Clements, Lim’s “technique [is] dazzlingly immaculate and the musical impulses propelling it startlingly original.” Preceded at 6:30 p.m. in the lower lobby by “The Society for Disobedient Listeners,” a talk by Chicago-based music writer Doyle Armbrust. 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium. Tickets $17–$56 (students, $15–$20) in advance at ums.org/season, by phone, and (if available) at the door. (734) 764–2538.
