Ypsilanti’s Annual Juneteenth Celebration
June 21 & 22. Two-day celebration of the anniversary of the first reading in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, on June 19, 1865—more than 2 years after it was signed by President Lincoln. Today: Performance by local rapper Prince Marc Jakob (11 a.m.) followed by an opening ceremony (1 p.m.). Also, live music (times TBA) by the headliner Lady Sunshine & the X Band, a popular local gospel-flavored blues band, along with jazz-soul fusion by the Gwenyth Hayes Trio and talented Ypsilanti soul singer Nikki Gio. Food and drink concessions. Bring your own chair. Note the new location this year. 11 a.m.–8 p.m., University Bank Commerce Center parking lot, 301 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti. Free.
