“Weather Report”: Kurt Elling (University Musical Society)

Celebrated Chicago jazz vocalist Elling is joined by original Weather Report drummer Peter Erskine to perform songs by the 1970s and 1980s fusion band, which had hits like “Mysterious Traveller,” “Teen Town,” and “Birdland.” Elling is known for his rich, octave-leaping baritone, an awesome command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics, and his idiosyncratic blend of soulful crooning, scat, vocalese, and spoken-word improvisations. Artie Shaw called him “the most interesting and innovative jazz singer to come along in years.” Tonight’s band also includes pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Essiet Okon Essiet, and guitarist Mike Moreno. 7:30 p.m., Michigan Theater. Tickets $30–$73 (students, $15-$20) in advance at ums.org/season, by phone, and (if available) at the door. (734) 764–2538.
