“Voices of Ann Arbor”: Vocal Arts Ensemble

Ben Cohen directs this local 24-voice chamber choir in a celebration of Ann Arbor’s bicentennial with a program featuring some of the city’s composers and poets, past and present, and drawing from its varied musical and literary influences, including the music of early German migrants, its locus as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and its role as a hub of protest in the 1960s. The program interweaves choral music with percussion and spoken word pieces, with guest performances by U-M drama professor Malcolm Tulip, U-M music professor Michael Gould, soprano Jennifer Goltz, poet Zilka Joseph, poet and Pioneer High School English teacher Jeff Kass, and others. Preceded by an art market of work by local artists and followed by a reception. 7:30-9 p.m., Genesis of Ann Arbor, 2309 Packard. $25 (seniors & students, $20; 18 & under, free) at a2tix.com and at the door. vocalartsannarbor@gmail.com.
