“Usher”: Penny Seats Theatre Company

Oct. 10–13, 1719, & 2426. Julia Garlotte directs local singer-actors in Michigan writer John Sousanis’s inventive adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher, Edgar Allan Poe’s haunted tale of madness set in the decaying house of a once-prosperous family. When a long-absent friend visits a brother and sister, the last surviving members of the clan, things take a dark turn. “With strong characters, exciting stage effects and a touch of ironic humor, there’s much more to get excited about than just the house falling, though even that trick is cleverly conceived and executed,” says Daily Oakland Press reviewer Judith Cookis Rubens in her review of a 2005 production of the play. Age 13 and up. 8 p.m. (7 p.m. on Oct. 13 only), Cahoots, 206 E. Huron St. Tickets $20 (students, $15; kids 12 and under, $14; seniors, $18), in advance at pennyseats.org and (if available) at the door. (612) 210–7329, thepennyseats@gmail.com.
