“Ulysses”: Elevator Repair Service (University Musical Society)

Oct. 19 & 20. This New York City-based theater company best known for Gatz, its award-winning verbatim staging of the entirety of the text of The Great Gatsby, takes on James Joyce’s mammoth Ulysses—in a highly abridged version that “retains much of the original’s humor, pathos and bawdiness,” according to the New York Times. The 7 performers sit down at a table for a sober reading of the novel but soon find themselves draining pints, getting in brawls, and committing debaucheries as they take a fast-forward tour through the 18 wildly distinct chapters of Joyce’s life-affirming masterpiece. Directed by John Collins with help from Scott Shepherd, who discuss their work at a Penny Stamps Lecture on October 17 (see listing). 7:30 p.m. (Sat.) & 2 p.m. (Sun.). Power Center. Tickets $36-$67 (students, $15-$20) in advance only at ums.org/season.
