“Twelfth Night”: U-M Musical Theatre Department
Oct. 10–13. Jessica Bogart directs musical theater students in Shaina Taub’s acclaimed 90-minute 2018 musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identities and misplaced affections. Her adaptation features Taub’s lyrics, set to an eclectic jazzy score, and dialogue that relies mainly on lines from the original play. In a review of the musical's Central Park premiere, the New York Times praised Taub for extending “the original play’s consideration of the ambiguities of identity to address an age in which the divisions between sexes and classes paradoxically feel both more porous and unbridgeable than ever.” 7:30 p.m. (Thurs.), 8 p.m. (Fri. & Sat.), & 2 p.m. (Sun.), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 North University. Tickets $34–$40 in advance at tickets.smtd.umich.edu & at the door. (734) 764–0583.
