“There Goes the Neighborhood: The Closing of Jones School”: Michigan Theater

Feb. 4: “There Goes the Neighborhood: The Closing of Jones School” (Donald Harrison, 2024). Premiere of this 50-minute documentary about the 1965 closing of Ann Arbor’s majority Black school (now Community High) which, in an effort to join a nationwide trend of school desegregation, struck a blow to a close-knit community and foreshadowed the gentrification of the Kerrytown and Water Hill neighborhoods. Part of Ann Arbor 200, the AADL’s commemoration of the city’s bicentennial year. 2 p.m.
