“The House on Mango Street”: U-M OperaLab
Jayce Ogren directs voice students, accompanied by the University Philharmonia Orchestra, in U-M composition grad Derek Bermel’s new operatic adaptation of Sandra Cisneros’s beloved 1983 coming-of-age novella about a Mexican American girl and the colorful Chicago neighborhood that challenges and supports her. This performance is a workshop presentation without staging or costumes in advance of the opera’s world premiere at the 2025 Glimmerglass Opera Festival. Berman and Cisneros attend the performance, and the audience is invited to share thoughts on the piece in a feedback session following the performance. 8 p.m., Hill Auditorium. Free. (734) 764–0583.
