“The Government Inspector”: U-M Musical Theatre Department
Feb. 20–23. Malcolm Tulip directs musical theater students in Jeffrey Hatcher’s 2009 adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s 1836 dramatic masterpiece, a satiric play about small-town corruption whose shrewd depiction of human folly still possesses a contemporary bite. The plot follows the story of a penniless impostor who manages to hoodwink an entire town. The play’s biting realism proved too much for Gogol’s contemporaries, whose vicious attacks caused him to flee Russia for more than a decade. Recommended for ages 13 & up. 7:30 p.m. (Thurs.), 8 p.m. (Fri. & Sat.), & 2 p.m. (Sun.), U-M Walgreen Arthur Miller Theatre, 1226 Murfin, North Campus. Tickets $25 (students, $13) in advance at smtd.umich.edu & at the door. (734) 615–3204.
