“The First Jew in Canada (A Trans Tale)”: First Unitarian Universalist Congregation
In a solo theatrical performance, Toronto-based storyteller and trans activist S. Bear Bergman tells the story of Jacques LaFargue, a historical figure who arrived as a sailor in Quebec City in 1738 and was arrested for suspicious behavior. Born Esther Brandeau in France, LaFargue donned male garb as a young adult and found work as a ship’s boy, a baker, an infantry captain, and a sailor, and was finally ejected from Canada, not for crossdressing but for being Jewish. Reception follows. 7 p.m., FUUC, 4001 Ann Arbor–Saline Rd. Free, donations accepted. sbearbergman.com.
