“Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto”: Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra
A2SO director Earl Lee conducts this polished local orchestra in a program highlighted by Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Violin Concerto, allegedly deemed “unplayable” by its original dedicatee but now an apogee in the concert violin repertoire. Guest soloist (replacing Stella Chen, who had to drop out) is acclaimed violinist Stefan Jackiw. With a style that is “striking for its intelligence and sensitivity” (Boston Globe), Jackiw has appeared as a soloist with the Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco symphony orchestras, among others. Also, Jessie Montgomery’s jazz-infused Overture, a one-movement tutti, and Shostakovich’s dark, emotional Symphony No. 10. The composer “heard” its third movement, the Allegretto, in a dream. Preconcert talk at 7 p.m. 8 p.m., Michigan Theater. Tickets $13–$79 in advance at a2so.com & the A2SO office (35 Research Dr., ste. 100), and (if available) at the door. (734) 994–4801.
