Sullivan Fortner & Ambrose Akinmusire: University Musical Society
Acclaimed New Orleans–bred, New York–based jazz piano virtuoso Fortner joins lauded California avante-garde trumpeter Akinmusire, an explorer in the musical realms of classical and hip-hop, to perform music that explores the intersection between classical chamber music and jazz improvisation. The program is inspired by the 1928 single recording “Weather Bird,” a Louis Armstrong and Earl “Fatha” Hines duet that’s considered a landmark example of cohesive and inventive ensemble and solo work. 7:30 p.m., Rackham Auditorium. Tickets $28–$52 (students, $12–$20) in advance at ums.org, by phone, and (if available) at the door. (734) 764–2538.
