This acclaimed novelist reads from and discusses her work. Her new novel Beautyland is an episodic tale of the life of a woman who, believing she is an alien born into a human body, sends reports to her extraterrestrial relatives via fax machine about the terrors and surprising joys of human beings as she grows up and experiences life. The New York Times praised it as “astonishing” and the Boston Globe as “a shimmering masterpiece.” Q&A. Also, tomorrow Bertino gives a free lecture (10–11 a.m., 3222 Angell Hall) on “How to Bake an Apple Pie from Scratch: Realistic Characters in Speculative Worlds.” 5:30–6:30 p.m., UMMA Stern Auditorium, 525 S. State. Livestream available for both programs at tinyurl.com/zellwriters24. Free. kimjulie@umich.edu.
