Lute Song Trio of the Baltimore Consort: Academy of Early Music
Ensemble from the Baltimore Consort, founded in 1980 to focus on the relationship between British and American folk music, courtly art song, and dance. Its 2021 album, The Food of Love, reveals what Early Music America calls “decades of time and care … spent with this repertoire and with each other.” The trio performing tonight includes lutist Ronn McFarlane, soprano Danielle Svonavec, and viola da gambist Mary Anne Ballard, and its program of 16th-century European music features popular continental favorites—French courtly airs and Italian dances—and songs from Shakespeare and Elizabethan composers like Dowland and Campion, along with traditional British Isles ballads in forms preserved in Appalachia. Preceded by a preconcert lecture by the artists at 6:45. 7:30 p.m., St. Andrew’s, 306 N. Division St. $35 ($10 students, $30 seniors) at academyofearlymusic.org by Apr. 7; $5 increase after Apr. 7, and at the door. (734) 228–4338.
