“Latinx Midwest History Symposium”: UMMA

Day-long symposium exploring Latinx art, community organizations, and activism. Today: 11 a.m.: “Making the Latinx Midwest.” Panel discussion with U-M art professor Nicole Marroquin, U-M American culture professor Sara Awartani, and U-M American culture PhD student Julianna Loerna-Wiggins, moderated by U-M media professor Colin Gunckel. 2–2:45 p.m.: “Tour of the UMMA La Raza Arts and Media Collective, 1975–Today.” Exhibit tour with UMMA curator David Choberka and U-M American culture student Pau Nava. 3–4:30 p.m.: “Networks: the Latinx Midwest in the Movimiento.” Panel discussion with Zine Mercado zine fest founder Oscar Arriola and Harry Gamboa Jr., a founding member of the influential Chicano performance art collective ASCO. Moderated by U-M Art & Design School dean Carlos Jackson. 4:30–5:45 p.m.: Reception with refreshments. 6–7:30 p.m.: “La Raza Art and Media Collective, 1975–Today.” Keynote panel discussion with La Raza founding members George Vargas, Ana Luisa Cardona, and Jesse Gonzalez. Also, a bus trip (Apr. 12, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.) from UMMA to southwest Detroit for a walking tour of murals. 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m., UMMA, 525 S. State St. Free.
