Ilya Kaminsky: U-M English Department Zell Visiting Writers Series
This Odessa-born poet, translator, and critic, a U-M poet in residence, discusses his work. His acclaimed 2019 poetry collection Deaf Republic consists of lyric poems presented as a play in two acts, set in two countries in turmoil, one inspired by Ukraine, the other, the United States. The New Yorker described it as a “contemporary epic,” adding, “Evident throughout is a profound imagination, matched only by the poet's ability to create a republic of conscience that is ultimately ours, too.” Q&A. Also, tomorrow (10–11 a.m., 3222 Angell Hall) Kaminsky gives a free lecture, “Your Own Singing School: How to Create Your Own Tradition.” 5:30–6:30 p.m., UMMA Stern Auditorium, 525 S. State. Livestream available for both programs at tinyurl.com/zellwriters24. Free. kimjulie@umich.edu.
