“Hänsel und Gretel”: U-M Voice & Opera Department
November 14–17. U-M opera students, accompanied by a U-M music student ensemble, perform Engelbert Humperdinck’s classic opera, an enchantingly ingenious adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale about a brother and sister who are lost in the woods, where they are imprisoned by an evil witch. Humperdinck created it as an entertainment for his own family, basing the score on captivating popular songs and rhythms. A hit after its 1893 premiere in Germany, it quickly became a holiday tradition around the world. Sung in German, English supertitles. 7:30 p.m. (Thurs.), 8 p.m. (Fri. & Sat), and 2 p.m. (Sun.), Power Center. Tickets $29–$35 (students, $16) in advance at smtd.umich.edu & at the door. (734) 615–3204.
