“Elizabeth Cree”: U-M Music School
Mar. 21–24. U-M voice students and the music student University Philharmonia Orchestra perform Kevin Puts & Mark Campbell’s 2017 one-act chamber opera based on Peter Ackroyd’s 1995 novel, The Trial of Elizabeth Cree. The plot interweaves the trial of the titular heroine for poisoning her husband, a series of brutal murders committed by a Jack the Ripper–style killer, and the spirited world of an English music hall, with appearances by luminaries from the Victorian Age. OperaWire praised the original production for its “ingenious mixture of expressionistic opera, music theater, art song, and film music styles.” 7:30 p.m. (Thurs.), 8 p.m. (Fri. & Sat.), and 2 p.m. (Sun.), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. Tickets $24 & $30 (students, $13) in advance at the Michigan League Box Office, tickets.smtd.umich.edu, and at the door. (734) 764-0583.
