“Earth Tones”: University Musical Society
Jan. 17 & 18. MSU music professor Etienne Charles, a respected Trinidad-born composer-trumpeter whose playing is known for its varied textures, pulsating percussion grooves, and velvet tone, leads an ensemble in a multimedia performance of jazz originals that borrow musical idioms from coastal communities at risk for severe effects of climate change. The performance includes stories, projected images, and short films of disappearing mangrove swamps, coral reefs, oyster beds, seagrass, sand dunes, and mud volcanoes. 7:30 p.m. Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 North University. $41–$51 (students $15–$20) in advance only at ums.org/season/2024-25-season or (734) 764–2538.
