July 17 & 20: “Black Orpheus” (Marcel Camus, 1959). Romantic tragedy that sets the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice in a contemporary Rio de Janeiro favela. The film is notable for its influential soundtrack, and it won the 1960 Cannes Palme d’Or, but has been widely criticized for reinforcing racist stereotypes.
