“asses.masses”: University Musical Society

Feb. 15 & 16. Ticketholders are invited to participate in this satirical video game designed by game makers and conceptual artists Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim to be played collectively by a live audience. One audience member at a time takes control while the group gives suggestions. It’s gaming as participatory performance—a performance that takes over 7 hours. The game’s epic story involves a herd of unemployed donkeys trying to get their jobs back while navigating the perils of a post-industrial society in which they’ve been made redundant. Reviews of the theatrical experience range from appreciation of the bawdy humor, collective emotions, and feelings of “triumph and joy” (Broadway World) to “excitement” giving way to “tiredness and tedium” (Intermission Magazine). Boredom is one of the game’s explicit themes. No previous gaming experience required. Also, Blenkarn and Lim give a Penny Stamps talk on Feb. 13 (see listing). 1–8:30 p.m. or so (with 4 intermissions), U-M Walgreen Drama Center Stamps Auditorium, 1226 Murfin, North Campus. $46 (students, $15-$20). (734) 764–2538.
