“As You Like It”: U-M Residential College/Nichols Arboretum
Every Thurs.–Sun., June 6–30. Carol Gray & Graham Atkin direct students and local actors in an alfresco production of Shakespeare's pastoral comedy centered on a noblewoman who must disguise herself as a man in order to win the world's respect. Set in the Forest of Arden, where a duke and his court are living in exile, the play features deft counterpointing of multiple plots, a swirl of romances, an extravagance of wit, and a canny assault upon the various socially sanctioned ways in which people inflict themselves upon one another. Audience members should be prepared for light weather conditions, periods of sitting, standing and walking. The RC’s annual Shakespeare in the Arb production is a hugely popular local summer tradition, and this year’s performances are part of Ann Arbor's bicentennial celebration. 6:30 p.m., meet at the Peony Garden entrance at 1610 Washington Heights. $25 (Matthaei-Nichols members, $20; students, $15) in advance only. June 23 is Youth Day with $5 tickets for youth ages 5–8. Tickets go on sale May 21 (May 14 for members) at mutotix.umich.edu & the Michigan Union Ticket Office and are held at will call at the Arboretum Visitor Center. (734) 998–9540.
