“Alexander Nevsky”: University Musical Society
Screening of this critically acclaimed epic 1938 film directed by Russian great Sergei Eisenstein with a live performance of Prokofiev’s score by the UMS Choral Union and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. The film depicts the attempted invasion of Novgorod in the 13th century by knights of the Holy Roman Empire and their subsequent defeat by Prince Alexander. Although known more for his symphonies and concertos, Sergei Prokofiev wrote several film scores. Preceded at 6:15 p.m. in the lower lobby by “The Society for Disobedient Listeners,” a talk by Chicago-based music writer and violist Doyle Armbrust. 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium.
