29th Annual Edgefest: Kerrytown Concert House
See 8 Wednesday. Today: At the quirky annual Edgefest Parade (noon), all are invited to bring any sort of instrument (including bells and whistles) and tag along (meet at 11:30 a.m. at KCH to join) with Scarlett Middle School band students and Edgefest artists. Performances today begin with Kenny Green’s Cosmic Music Collective (2 p.m.), a regional collective of Afro futurist jazz musicians which includes pianist Green, reed player Skeeter Shelton, vocalist & singing bowl player Sophiyah Elizabeth, bassist Darius Savage, percussionist Dushun Mosley, and guitarist Ras Kente. Solo pianist Marilyn Crispell (3 p.m.) is known for her improvisational prowess. The Darius Jones Trio (4 p.m.), known for its expressive, complex sound, includes saxophonist Jones, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Jason Nazary. Gwen Laster’s NewMuse 4Tet (7:30 p.m.) includes violinist Laster, violist Melanie Dyer, cellist Teddy Rankin-Parker, and percussionist Andrew Drury. Its new album, Keepers of the Flame, includes what Chronogram calls “tonal imagery of almost synesthetic vividness.” The festival closes with the 20th anniversary celebration of NYC-based avant-chamber-jazz group Jason Kao Hwang’s Edge (8:30 p.m.). A Jazz Times review of its 2024 album praised “the stunning extended vocabulary of each member of the quartet.” Its regular lineup–violinist Hwang, trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum, bassist Ken Filiano, and percussionist Andrew Drury–is augmented by the local husband-and-wife duo of vocalist Deanna Relyea and reeds player Piotr Michalowski. Noon, 2, 3, 4, 7:30, & 8:30 p.m.
