Known for her generosity, unwavering love, and infectious energy, Maya touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. She will be remembered for her kindness, devotion to her family, and commitment to her community.

Maya was born in Riga, Latvia, to Ludmila (Lucy) and Andrejs Ritins. Her childhood was marked by the challenges of World War II, witnessing the Soviet invasion of Latvia and the loss of her father, who was conscripted into military service. Despite these hardships, Maya, her mother, and her younger aunt, Mara, found refuge in a displaced persons camp in Germany before emigrating to America with the support of family.

They settled in Southfield, Michigan, where Maya attended Southfield High School and was named homecoming queen. Her mother, Lucy, later married August Jacobson, with whom she had Maya’s beloved brother, Michael.

Maya went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Michigan. While working at the U-M Golf Course during her studies, she met her future husband, Joseph E. Savarino (Joe). They married and spent over 25 wonderful years together, raising five children: Stephanie, Julie, Peter (Erin), Christina (John), and Joseph (Aline).

A dedicated mother, Maya often referred to herself as the family’s “taxi,” driving her children to music lessons, sports and skating practices, games, and dance classes. Her greatest pride was in her family, and she spoke often of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments and kindness.

Maya shared a deep love for music with Joe, regularly attending University of Michigan Musical Society (UMS) performances and hosting visiting, eminent performers in their home. After Joe’s passing in 1985, she continued to support UMS and attend their world-class events at Hill Auditorium and the Power Center.

Maya continued her education, earning a master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Madonna University. Faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of several Ann Arbor churches, including First Presbyterian, with whom she traveled to Spain and completed the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. She also attended and supported St. Francis, St. Thomas, and St. Mary’s Catholic churches.

Maya referred to herself as a “communitarian” and worked tirelessly to support causes such as Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley, where she helped raise funds and build homes for the homeless. She also co-chaired the 2005 St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ball and supported the Downtown Ann Arbor Historical Street Exhibit Program. She was also a longstanding member of the “Never on Thursday” Bridge Club, participating for over 60 years and forging lifelong friendships.

Maya’s love for Ann Arbor, which she called “the center of my universe,” was evident in every aspect of her life, including the home she cherished overlooking the U-M Golf Course—where she and Joe first met.

Maya is survived by her younger aunt, brother, five children, and her seven beloved grandchildren: Joseph, Nicholas, Michael, Sophia, Mateo, Vivienne, and Inés—who brought immense joy to her life. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren, including Laura, Renée, and Sarah, whom she loved dearly. She will forever be remembered for the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the joy she brought to the world.

Per Maya’s wishes, she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Joe, in a private service. A Celebration of Life will be planned, and invitations will be sent to honor her remarkable journey.

Maya’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to her excellent caregivers at Kresge Rehabilitation in Chelsea.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of Maya’s favorite charities:
