Madras Masala Express has opened in the growing Lower Town neighborhood, its second location after a 2023 fire destroyed its building on Maynard St.

Gopal Ramanujam reopened his Indian restaurant at 2016 Packard late last year (Marketplace Changes, December 2023), and he says things are going well there, but “we miss our college kids” downtown. So the new branch aims to attract some of that business, as well as hospital-area workers and residents from the Beekman on Broadway apartments across the street.

Whereas the original restaurant was full service, the new locations are “fast casual” with counter service and ample seating. The expansive menus are similar, Ramanujam says, though the newest site doesn’t offer dosas. His wife, Uma Arokiasamy, is spearheading operations there.
