“I Spy the wonderful glass and copper Fletcher Street entry to the Kellogg Institute Building,” writes Eric Sobocinski. “The OG Dentistry building at 299 Fletcher has such beautiful lines in their glasswork,” says Mary Adams. “Completed in 1940,” adds Dave Bicknell, “it was the original home for dental education, which has since expanded.” “We moved here recently and I am feeling very proud of this one!” says Rediane Longoria. “With such impressive design I could not forget this door.”
“The designer was Lewis J. Sarvis,” relays David Karl. “I especially like the Art Deco motif of the glass doors. It sets it apart from other buildings.” Karl also notes that it was “partially funded through the Public Works Administration.” According to information at the Bentley Historical Library, in 1938 the W. K. Kellogg Foundation offered to provide 55 percent of the cost of an addition to the School of Dentistry, on the condition that the PWA provide the rest. The total was just under $450,000. “Its beauty had escaped my notice because it is indeed ‘off the beaten path,’” Karl says, referring to the clue.
Our random drawing winner from eleven correct entries is Rediane Longoria. “It’s my first time recognizing a landmark,” says the new Ann Arborite—and her first time at Zingerman’s Roadhouse, where she’ll enjoy her $25 gift certificate.
