“That’s Santa Ono’s house (the U-M President’s house),” says Monet Tiedemann. It’s currently “in the midst of its $15 million renovation,” writes Eric Sobocinski. Approved in 2022, “the renovation project [addresses] long needed accessibility upgrades, safety, and security functionality while preserving the historic features of the building,” writes Barb Tester. The project is slated for completion this summer.
“It is a grand historic residence,” says Tester. It’s “the oldest building on campus,” writes Bob Maddox, noting that the initial section was built in 1840. “Definitely adds curb-appeal to central campus,” he adds. “I’d say that a 183-year-old house deserves more than a facelift every now and then,” says Dan Romanchik, referencing the clue.
In addition to serving as the personal residence for the president, the first level hosts more than seventy events throughout the year. “I have some fun memories of that house,” writes Erin Trame, “having worked in it as a student and as part of my first career after graduating.”
“The accessibility changes will allow many more people to enjoy the beauty of the residence,” adds Tester. “I imagine President Santa Ono is looking forward to settling into the residence and inviting guests to the President’s House.”
We received nineteen entries in July, all correct. Our random drawing winner is Bob Maddox. He will enjoy his $25 gift certificate at Zingerman’s.
