Foods of India/Kitchen of India, the little Indian grocery store on Broadway with the takeout window in back, is in transition, says “Gandhi,” as he wants to be called. The twenty-four-year-old U-M engineering grad bought the grocery store last year from Sapan Goel (“that old man who was always sitting behind the counter, since forever,” Gandhi offers up helpfully as a description). Kamal Rajput still owns Kitchen of India, the restaurant kitchen in back, which is operating normally at the moment, selling curries, dals, and samosas.
Gandhi, too, will be using the kitchen. “I’m rethinking. This is a student area. Students don’t cook. They either want takeout food or something they can reheat. I want to offer food that is healthy, cheap, and easy to eat.”
He mentions sandwiches and “Indian fast food, street food.” While he thinks it through, he’s got a few shelves of groceries and is keeping the Bollywood DVD rentals.
