Events

Feb. 1 (noon-3 p.m.): “Paint Like Bob Ross”: Ann Arbor Art Center (A2AC). Kids ages 8–12, along with their caregivers, are invited to join certified Bob Ross instructor Ted Simpson to explore beginner-friendly painting methods and embrace “happy little accidents.” No prior painting experience needed. Feb. 1 (2–3:30 p.m.): Tiny Fairy Cottages: AADL Downtown. Kids age 7 & up invited to turn a miniature birdhouse into a fantastical fairy dwelling using decorative moss, crystals, pinecones, and other natural materials. 

Every Mon.–Fri. (different times): Preschool Storytimes: AADL. Half-hour program of stories and songs for kids ages 2–5 (with caregiver). Pittsfield (Mon. 10:30 a.m.), Downtown (Tues. 11 a.m.), Malletts Creek (Tues. 11 a.m. & Wed. 10:30 a.m.), Traverwood (Thurs. 11 a.m.), and Westgate (Fri. 1 p.m.).

Every Mon.–Wed. & Fri. (different times): Playgroups for Babies: AADL. Fifteen minutes of stories, rhymes, and songs led by AADL staffers, followed by a short open playtime. Feb. 3, 10, 17, & 24 (10:30–11:30 a.m.): “Winter Story Time”: Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation Environmental Education. City environmental educator Eleva Potter leads kids ages 36 (younger siblings welcome), with adult accompaniment, in a program that includes stories, discussion, and crafts on the theme of animals’ lives in winter. Feb. 3: Animal Shadows. Feb. 10: Animal Tracks. Feb. 17: Animal Hibernation. Feb. 24: Nocturnal Animals. Every Thurs. (10:30–11:30 a.m.): “Little Paws Toddler Time”: HSHV. Stories, crafts, & fingerplays. Also, interaction with adoptable cats and dogs and a chance to make a toy or treat for the animals. Feb. 6 (5-6:30 p.m.): “Kids Invite Someone Special (K.I.S.S.) Dance”: Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation. Father/daughter, mother/son, or any adult/any child age 2–10 invited to dance to recorded music. Feb. 7 (11:15 a.m.–noon): “Read and Look”: U-M Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. Clive Gifford & Gosia Herba’s The Ancient World in 100 Words. Feb. 7 (1–2 p.m.): Paper Heart Garland: AADL Westgate. Kids ages 3–10 invited to trace, cut, and glue paper to create a string of hearts.

Feb. 7 (1–2 p.m.): “Family-Friendly Disney Karaoke”: AADL Pittsfield. A chance for kids age 5 & up to sing along to a wide variety of Disney songs.

Feb. 7 (1–3 p.m.): “Scientist Spotlight”: AADL Downtown. Kids grades K–5 invited to engage in interactive activities with U-M Natural History Museum research scientists.

Feb. 7 (4–5 p.m.): Kids & Family Open Mic and Comedy Hour: Oz’s Music Environment. Kids ages 6–12 and family members invited to play a song or share a story or joke. Oz’s Music Environment, 1922 Packard. Free; donations accepted. (734) 662–8283. 

Feb. 7 (6:30–8:30 p.m.): “Glow Ball”: Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission. Kids age 3 & up, accompanied by an adult, invited for dancing to recorded music. All grade K–5 kids invited for this drop-off event that includes a mix of outdoor snow play (weather permitting) and indoor games, crafts, and activities. Pack a lunch and winter gear. Feb. 13: (11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.): “HEXBUG Adventures”: AADL Downtown. Kids grades K–5 invited to play with the library’s robotic HEXBUGs in an interactive obstacle course.

Feb. 13 (11 a.m.–noon): “With Love from UMich: A Family-Friendly Musical Experience”: AADL Downtown. Music Teachers National Association U-M Chapter members perform a program of piano music for Valentine’s Day. Kids grades K–5 invited to play along on provided keyboards.

Feb. 13 (1–2:30 p.m.): Wild Valentines”: Ann Arbor Parks & Recreation Environmental Education. This Ohio-based children’s writer reads her picture book Ramadan for Everyone, a Muslim holiday story about a young girl determined to fast and pray just like her older sister. Feb. 15 (noon–1 p.m.): “Paper Penguin Friends”: AADL Pittsfield. Kids grades preK–5 invited to cut out and glue together paper shapes to make penguins.

Feb. 16 (11 a.m.–noon): “Winter Painting”: AADL Traverwood. A chance for kids grades preK–5 to paint winter scenes.

Feb. 16 (11 a.m.–noon): Robot Storytime & Craft”: AADL Westgate. Kids grades preK–3 invited to make robot-themed crafts and listen to stories featuring robots.

Feb. 17 (1–1:45 p.m.): “Young Scientists”: AADL Westgate. Science-themed stories and simple science experiments for preschoolers accompanied by a caregiver.

Feb. 17 (3–4 p.m.): “Cardboard Pinball Machine”: AADL Pittsfield. Kids grades K–5 invited to decorate a cardboard box with household items to construct a simple analog pinball machine. Younger participants may need adult assistance to complete the project.

Feb. 17 (3–4 p.m.): “Balloon-Powered Cars”: AADL Malletts Creek. A chance for kids grades K–5 to use simple materials to make a fun and zippy balloon-powered car.

Feb. 17 (6 p.m.): “Gabby’s Dollhouse Live!”: Marquee Arts Not Just For Kids Series. Professional touring children’s theater companies Terrapin Station Entertainment and TEG Life Like Touring present a show inspired by the Netflix children’s TV series about the adventures of a girl and her feline friends inside a magical dollhouse. Feb. 21 (11 a.m.–noon): “Painted Cardboard Birds”: AADL Traverwood. A chance for kids grades K–5 to create a colorful bird decoration using cardboard tubes, paint, and cardstock.

Feb. 22 (10:30 & 11:30 a.m.): Jewish Storytime: AADL Downtown. Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor storytellers lead a program of stories and activities in English (10:30 a.m.) and Hebrew (11:30 a.m.) for kids ages 4–7. 

Feb. 22 (1 p.m.): 39th Annual Storytelling Festival: The Ark. See 20 Friday Events listing. Today: a program of family-oriented stories by Adam Booth, a storyteller featured in last night’s show (see 21 Saturday listing), and Jennifer Otto, a Lansing storyteller known for her original whimsical tales. 

Feb. 22 (2–3 p.m.): “DIY Stamps”: AADL Downtown. A chance for kids grades preK–5 to use foam shapes to make their own rubber stamps.

Feb. 28 (1–2 p.m.): Yasu Ishida: AADL Downtown. Performance by this Japanese American children’s entertainer whose act combines elements of traditional Japanese storytelling, music, origami, and magic.

Feb. 28 (1:30–3 p.m.): “Stories and STEM”: WCC Super STEAM Saturday. Families invited to explore the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through activity stations with hands-on STEM experiments.
