“13 Tongues”: Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (University Music Society)

Oct. 26 & 27. This Taiwanese modern dance company returns to Ann Arbor for the first time in 13 years with an evocative tribute in dance to Taiwan, with motifs ranging from ancient Taoist rites to contemporary Taipei street performers. The choreography draws from artistic director and choreographer Cheng Tsung-lung’s mother’s stories as well as his own childhood memories of the bustling street life of Bangka, the oldest district in Taipei. The evocative soundtrack blends Taiwanese folk songs, Taoist chant, and electronica. 7:30 p.m. (Sat.) & 2 p.m. (Sun.). Power Center. Tickets $40–$82 (students, $15–$20) in advance only at ums.org/season.
