“Iolanthe”: U-M Gilbert and Sullivan Society
More

April 4–7. This accomplished local town-and-gown company presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1882 comic operetta about the fallout from the marriage between the fairy Iolanthe and a mortal. The plot centers on their son, Strephon, who loves a humble shepherdess but is kept from marrying her by several nobles, including his father, who also covet her. The fairy band reacts by placing Strephon into Parliament, where his magical powers ensure the passage of any bill he supports. When he drafts a bill basing membership eligibility in the House of Lords on intelligence, the peers are thrown into a tizzy that escalates when Iolanthe drops a paternity bombshell. Iolanthe is especially prized for its music, including the arias “O Foolish Fey” and “Blue Blood,” and the dizzying patter song “When You’re Lying Awake with a Dismal Headache.” 8 p.m. (Thurs.–Sat.) & 2 p.m. (Sat. & Sun), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, Michigan League. Tickets $30 (seniors, $27; students with ID, $15) in advance at the Michigan League Ticket Office, mutotix.umich.edu, and at the door. (734) 763–8587.
