Ann Arbor’s second Ulta–with “one-stop shopping for prestige, mass and salon products, and service”–opened February 15 (the first is at Cranbrook Village). An enthusiastic press release promised that one could “Play, test, sample or browse more than 20,000 beauty products, 4,000 testers, 350 fragrances and more than 1,000 scents.”

On opening day, Ulta didn’t seem to have quite that many free samples on offer. Most prominently displayed were tester bottles of a new crop of celebrity perfumes, inspired by Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Bieber, and, what seems like an odd choice for a fragrance-linked branding, (the meat-wearing) Lady Gaga.
