“This month’s I Spy is the Drink Coca-Cola mural outside of the reopened Blue Front [at] 701 Packard Street!” writes Crystal Lin Yie about February’s feature. The mural is “right around the corner from Packard,” says David Frye–“on the Arbor Street side,” adds Marilyn Knepp.
“I love that they repainted the murals when they gave the building a fresh coat of blue paint,” shares Monet Tiedemann. “My son re-painted it a few years ago,” recalls Judi Erwin in a handwritten note.
“It’s one of the coolest buildings in Ann Arbor,” offers David Karl, filled “with a lot of great memories.” In operation since the 1920s, he writes, it originally “sold comic books, novels and toys.” Notably, it was also the first place in town to sell the New York Times. Most recently, Ann Arbor native Adam Gottschalk and his wife, Anne-Catherine Dargis, essentially reinvented the establishment after the last party store closed in 2014; it’s now a craft beer and wine shop.
