“Seeing some of my old shows, I make myself blush,” says Tanya Veilleux of her plans to once again invade community access cable. Back in the nineties, community access (now CTN) aired ninety-three no-holds-barred episodes of her show, “Get Curious with Safety Girl.” Now, motivated in part by concern for her seven-year-old daughter, she’s resuming her role as a self-styled sex educator.
She’s planning to shoot new intros and postscripts to the original shows (“to update and correct a few errors”), then hopes to add some new episodes to air later this year. To raise money to digitize the old episodes, she’s crowdfunding on GoFundMe.com, promoting it with a “Free Vibrator Day” last fall at her sex toy shop in the lower level of Bongz & Thongz on Liberty downtown.
“I don’t think I have to apologize,” Safety Girl says, for the uproar her ambitious and very frank programs caused at the cable commission and city council back in the day. She says she’s more shocked at the way young males exposed to Internet porn treat women than by an old episode where “it looks like I’m having an orgasm right on the air!”
Well, was she? “I can’t tell you,” she coyly replies, without blushing.
