A voucher promotion in advance of the new Mochinut franchise near North Campus yielded an impressive 3,500-plus Instagram followers, but also led to hour-long waits and product shortages in its early days.
Franchisee Aiden Chae, reluctant to “seek more media exposure” by speaking to the Observer, emails that “we really appreciate all the support and patience everyone has given us.” It’s the first Michigan location of the Los Angeles–based company founded in 2020, with over 175 stores nationwide.
Mochi donuts, made with rice flour, consist of eight dough balls connected in a circle. Assorted flavors start at three for $10. Korean-style corn dogs, filled with hot dogs and/or mozzarella, come in four coating choices: original (rice), potato, Hot Cheetos, and crispy ramen. Several bubble teas and lemonades are available to wash it all down.
Still in the works are online ordering, delivery apps, and an in-store photo booth.
